Pike builds solar photovoltaic generating facilities in the Northeast

Tapping into its expertise in constructing new facilities in all kinds of weather, Pike Renewables is building eight solar photovoltaic generating facilities in Connecticut and upstate New York for a national electric utility.

These are being constructed on aggressive schedules, and also have added challenges of difficult weather conditions. One example of this work is the construction of three arrays totaling 60,000 solar panels and covering 100 acres in Cortland County, New York. Each of the arrays will generate 7.5 megawatts (MW) of direct-current energy. Pike is handling a turnkey installation of electrical, racking and solar panel construction and grid interconnection to meet the client’s goal of reliable, clean energy to augment the electric grid and serve neighboring homes and businesses.

Another solar array Pike is building for the national electric utility is a field of 78,000 panels on 120 acres in Enfield, Connecticut. This array will produce 32 MW of direct-current energy. Pike is performing electrical and 115 kV substation installation and grid interconnection to serve local homes and businesses.

Work began on all eight projects during the second half of 2020.

Pike wins contract for Florida EV chargers

Pike Renewables is installing 12 electric vehicle fast chargers in Florida for a regional electric utility. Pike is constructing a set of electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging stations along the 300-mile Florida’s Turnpike, one of the Sunshine State’s most important highways, and is also building EV fast-charging stations in Florida shopping plazas.

Pike is installing charging terminals, foundations, bollards and tie-backs to the main power source, and performing landscape and asphalt restoration. This work will allow a regional electricity utility to meet its commitment to deploy fast-charging stations across Florida, a plan envisioned to include charging facilities at public parks, popular tourist destinations and large business locations. The chargers will be compatible with all electric cars, including Tesla models, and with all plug-in hybrids.

The chargers are intended to accelerate EV adoption by giving consumers “range confidence” for longer commutes. Construction on the 12 chargers began in June 2020. The chargers are being constructed in several areas of Florida, including Fort Myers, Sarasota, West Palm Beach and St. Augustine.

Pike wins contracts to construct battery storage projects

Companies needing to find clean energy sources continue to turn to Pike Renewables thanks to our expertise in handling these jobs. Pike recently won contracts to construct eight storage systems across four states.

During the second half of 2020, Pike began to construct to build two solar and battery storage projects in upstate New York and six battery energy storage systems, four in New York and one each in Florida and Nebraska, for a national electric utility. Additionally, two battery energy storage systems are being built in Massachusetts under contract with a separate national electric utility.

One of the Massachusetts projects, designed to provide a large pharmaceutical research facility with backup emergency power to support research operations, will contain 400 batteries, each weighing 200 pounds. Pike will procure and install the system, commission it and interconnect with the local electric utility. Pike will perform similar work for the second Massachusetts project, the installation and commissioning of 1,000 batteries. The end user here will be the local electric utility, for whom the completed project will enable charging during off-peak hours and discharging/use during peak hours to reduce peak load.
